Key Arena Information:
Key Arena is an indoor arena that is located a few miles north of downtown Seattle, Washington. This venue is also referred to as Key Arena at Seattle Center by many people in the area. But regardless of what you call this venue, it is safe to say that it has a lot to offer in the way of fan experience. Not only does Key Arena play host of many sporting events each year, but concerts and special events also stop by from time to time.
There are three primary tenants that call Key Arena home. They include the Seattle Supersonics of the NBA, the Seattle Storm of the WNBA, and the Seattle Thunderbirds of the WHL. Each one of these teams play their home games at Key Arena and this alone is good enough for hundreds of events each year.
This venue opened its doors in 1962. At that time it was known as the Seattle Center Coliseum, and stayed that way until 1994. This is when the arena underwent an entire rebuild in order to make it modern enough to compete with the rest of the venues in the country. This rebuild cost the Seattle Supersonics approximately $21 million, and the City of Seattle $74.5 million. While this was a lot of money, repairs were needed so that the venue could last longer.
On November 4, 1995 the rebuild was complete, and the new name of the venue was Key Arena named after Key Bank who purchased the naming rights. The Supersonics opened the new arena by playing a regular season game against the Los Angeles Lakers. Since then, thousands more events have taken place inside.
Although Key Arena may not be as modern as some other facilities, it still has a lot to offer fans.
